Developing Commercially Viable Audio Coding Algorithms

Yu-Li You, Ph.D.

Audio coding algorithms are used to obtain compact representations of

high quality audio signals for efficient transmission or storage. A

variety of issues need to be carefully considered and tackled when

developing a commercially viable algorithm, including the trade-off

between coding efficiency and decoder complexity. This presentation

will discuss the fundamental properties of audio signals and make a

special note that the human ear processes audio signals primarily in

the frequency domain. It will then describe a general structure for

audio coding algorithms and discuss how it was embodied in a few audio

coding standards, including China’s DRA Multichannel Digital Audio

Coding Algorithm.

Yu-Li You received his Ph.D. in 1995 from the University of Minnesota

in Twin Cities and MS and BS degrees from Northwestern

Telecommunication Institute, Xian, China, in 1988 and 1985,

respectively. He worked for Seagate Technology from 1995 to 1996 and

DTS from 1996 to 2001. He co-founded Audioplus Technology in 2001 and

served as its CTO and Vice President. He co-founded Digital Rise

Technology in 2004 and has served as its CTO and Vice President since

then. He is an adjunct associate professor since 2008 and was an

adjunct assistant professor from 1997 to 1998, both for the University

of Minnesota in Twin Cities.

Yu-Li is the inventor and author for China’s DRA Multichannel Digital

Audio Coding Standard, which is labeled as the first autonomous

Chinese standard accepted by an international organization (Blu-ray

Disc Association). He published more than 20 journal and conference

papers and has more than 30 issued or pending patents.

游余立,广晟数码数字音频编解码算法(DRATM)发明人,于1995年获美国著名的University of Minnesota in Twin Cities电子工程博士。1995年至1996年,任美国Seagate Technology公司高级工程师;1996年至2001年,任美国DTS公司高级工程师;1997年至1999年,任美国明尼苏达大学电气与计算机工程系客座助理教授;现任广晟数码技术有限公司首席技术官(CTO)。国际著名学术期刊《IEEE Transactions on Image Processing》、《IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing》和《IEEE Signal Processing Letters》技术审稿人。发表的杂志论文包括《IEEE Transactions on Image Processing》4篇,《IEEE Signal Processing Letters》1篇。发表的会议论文20篇,其中IEEE的国际会议论文12篇。
